Government House External Wall Restoration
Andrew Plastering was honoured to contribute to the restoration of the external walls at Government House, one of Auckland’s most significant and historic landmarks. This project showcased our deep commitment to heritage preservation, craftsmanship, and the use of authentic materials and techniques.
Government House is a symbol of national heritage, blending architectural grandeur with rich history. The exterior walls, exposed to decades of weather and environmental wear, required careful assessment and expert restoration to maintain both structural integrity and aesthetic authenticity.
Our team approached the project with meticulous attention to detail. We began by thoroughly inspecting the façade to identify areas of plaster damage, cracking, and deterioration. Given the building’s heritage status, all repair work needed to be sympathetic to the original construction methods and materials.
Using traditional lime-based plasters and specialist masonry repair techniques, we carefully reinstated damaged sections of the walls. This approach not only preserved the building’s historic character but also provided flexibility and breathability essential for older masonry. Our skilled craftsmen matched textures and finishes precisely to ensure repairs blended seamlessly with existing surfaces.
The project also demanded close collaboration with heritage architects and conservation specialists. Together, we balanced the requirements of modern durability and compliance with conservation guidelines, ensuring Government House would remain protected for future generations.
Throughout the restoration, we maintained a tidy, efficient worksite with minimal disruption to the surrounding grounds and operations. The final result is a beautifully restored façade that honours the building’s legacy while reinforcing its resilience against Auckland’s coastal climate.
This project exemplifies Andrew Plastering’s dedication to heritage plastering excellence—where traditional skills meet modern standards to protect and celebrate New Zealand’s architectural treasures.
