Restoring an Icon

Andrew Plastering was proud to be part of the skilled team entrusted with restoration work on the iconic Auckland Museum—one of New Zealand’s most significant heritage buildings. This project was not just about surface repair; it was about honouring history, preserving craftsmanship, and ensuring the longevity of a treasured civic landmark.

Located in the Auckland Domain, the Museum is known for its grand neoclassical architecture and cultural importance. Working on a building of this scale and historical value required a deep respect for original materials, attention to detail, and technical mastery. Our team—each member a specialist in their craft—was brought in to repair and replicate various plaster elements both inside and out.

From reinstating traditional lime plaster to restoring decorative cornices, columns, and ceiling mouldings, the work demanded precision and patience. In many areas, fragile or damaged original plaster had to be carefully removed, with new sections matched exactly to maintain architectural integrity. Where possible, original materials and methods were used to stay true to the building’s heritage, including traditional hand-finishing techniques rarely seen in modern construction.

One of the unique challenges of the Auckland Museum project was balancing modern structural requirements with the aesthetic expectations of a historical space. Every repair had to meet strict heritage conservation standards while also ensuring durability for high public use.

Throughout the process, we worked closely with architects, heritage consultants, and engineers to ensure a seamless blend of old and new. The result is a beautifully refreshed interior that honours the building’s history, supports its future, and reflects the kind of craftsmanship Andrew Plastering is proud to deliver.

This project reflects our core strength: combining traditional knowledge with contemporary care. Being part of Auckland Museum’s restoration is not just a job we’re proud of—it’s a legacy we’re honoured to contribute to.
